School Shop Project 2007 - 2008:
An additional source of income for the EDGET BAANDNET PRIMARY SCHOOL.
Handed over to our local partner in 2008.
A school shop—a traditional hut selling bamboo furniture and local handicrafts—was established to generate additional income for the school and provide training opportunities for older children and young people. In Ethiopia, primary school pupils are sometimes 15 years old or older and frequently have to leave school after Grade 4 for economic reasons. EBCC secured approximately €1,800 in financial support from the German Embassy, while additional funding from outside the organisation, including private birthday donations, meant that EBCC itself only had to contribute around €250. The majority of EBCC's contribution therefore consisted of free consultancy and assistance in securing local funding. The total project cost was approximately €3,300, including the initial stock.
The shop was handed over to the school community in October 2008. It was rented to a cooperative of three local businesswomen, and the rental income continues to finance the school's feeding programme.
