SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GIRLS – More Information

Around 67 million children worldwide do not attend school, the majority of them girls. Girls are less likely than boys to continue into secondary education and, particularly in rural Ethiopia, are often married as early as the age of 11 or 12. By gaining an education and the opportunity to earn their own income, a girl can lift both herself and her future children out of poverty. She is far more likely to invest her income in her children's health, education, and future. Educated girls also tend to marry later and have fewer, healthier children.

A sponsorship starts at just €20 per month. This covers not only the scholarship itself but also the support of a dedicated social worker who coordinates with the family and school while monitoring the student's academic progress. As a general principle, EDGET supports only girls who achieve academic results above 65%. The girls are also required to account for how their scholarship funds are used. Support continues until they complete their university degree.

Children's Rights – International agreements protecting children and young people

In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the United Nations recognised that children are entitled to special care and assistance. These fundamental rights were later established as legally binding under international law through the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). Today, this convention remains the central international framework for safeguarding every child's right to a life with dignity and equal opportunities. Children's rights and the particular protection and support needs of young people have also been incorporated into numerous other international agreements and declarations.
